TOSLINK Troubleshooting Guide
No Audio
You can usually check the operation of TOSLINK by visually confirming a red light on the cable tip when attached to a source device like a TV. Even without a cable, you can open the flap over the TOSLINK port to see if the red LED is active.
Also ensure that your source device is configured to output via TOSLINK, as some TV’s don’t have this set by default. Some TV’s can’t use TOSLINK and their internal speakers at the same time.
Unstable Audio
If you have a known good TOSLINK cable available, try using it in place of a suspect cable. If you’re using another TOSLINK device like a switch or splitter, try removing it from the installation to see if the problem goes away.
If a switch or splitter is causing issues, you can try plugging into any free ports which may be available. If you regularly unplug and swap TOSLINK cables to connect various devices, also check to ensure that no dust, lint or other foreign objects are trapped in the connectors.
Surround Sound Unavailable
TOSLINK does not support all of the same multi-channel audio formats which HDMI does. Whenever possible, configure your devices to work with a TOSLINK-compatible audio format, such as 5.1/7.1 Compressed Dolby Digital or DTS Surround.
If these formats are not available or result in no audio, you can also test your equipment with PCM stereo.
